Three Strikes - You're Out!

Cons

  • Bad Disk
  • Poor shipping

    Comments about this product:

The Discovery Shop chose to ship the product via some sort of "DHL mail" - whatever that is!? First, I live in Alaska and the shipping was realatively expensive. Second, they sent an email with tracking information, but every time I tried to check the tracking it would not work. All I could get from the DHL tracking webpage was a message apologizing for the fact that their tracking wasn't working. Third, it took ten days for the DVD to arrive. Why don't these companies just use the US Postal Service? The shipping would have cost less, arrived in two or three days and I could have actually tracked it!

Now for the program itself: The actual content is pretty good with some stunning photography. That said, the first disk of the two-disk set played fine. The second disk, however, has a malfunction about 1/3 of the way into the program. The program just quits playing and locks up my Blu-Ray player at the same point in the disk. I've tried to play it several times with the same result each time. It is impossible to get past this bad spot. I tried washing off the disk, but it didn't help - the error is apparently embeded on the disk itself.

Finally, in trying to "skip" past the bad spot, I noticed that the each episode is broken up into only four chapters. Each episode is an hour long so if you want to skip to a certain location your options are limited. With all of the data that can be crammed onto a Blu-Ray disk these disks have a very simplistic menu.

    Conclusions:
    1. Discovery Channel - dump the contract with DHL and just ship the DVD via the US Potal Service!
    2. When I buy a Blu-Ray disk, I expect it to actually play without catastophic machanical/digital problems!
    3. Improve the disk menu!
